As summer is fading away, I want to share a memory from the Soho House beach hotel in Garraf – a sweet spot to have in mind for next year’s vacation or a weekend break to Barcelona
Right from the entrance at Little Beach House Hotel you are met by a panoramic view of the sea, which sets the dominant vibe of the place. All over the sea is hypnotically present, blending in with the ‘50s, vintage bohemian laidback style. This is the only hotel in the small bay and there are only 17 rooms including one duplex studio with a bathtub on the private rooftop.
Before exclusively for Soho House Club members
This place is one of my absolute favourites around Barcelona. I think many people don’t know it, also because the hotel is part of Soho House, a private members’ club, co-working spaces and boutique hotels, originally for people from the creative industries.
From this year you can stay at the Soho House hotels, visit the restaurants all over the world +more as a friend of club members with the Soho “Friends” membership.
The beach is public though so anyone can enjoy the place, regardless of the hotel. Garraf is an old fishing village half an hour’s drive from Barcelona. So many things come together at this place which makes it unique and very different from the larger beaches on each side Sigtes and Gavá.
The small hotel is right in front of the beach tucked away in the small bay and wrapped in the cliffs and the mountains in the back. The place is small and cute with the traditional wooden beach huts “casetes” surrounding the beach and the authentic atmosphere of the tiny village on the hill, no tourist buzz.
There is not a lot to do apart from relaxing and enjoying the sea and the spectacular nature around. This is exactly what I did when I escaped the city for a day.
My One Day Break
One day in late August, I seriously needed a break from the city. I thought of going to one of the Spanish islands, but it would become more stressful than relaxing with the short time I had available.
Finally, I decided just to take one night at Little Beach House. I’ve been a member of Soho House most of my time in Barcelona so had spent the day many times, but never stayed overnight.
Used to think that if I book at hotel room, it should be further away from home. Let me share the day and how it changed my mind.
Waking Up in The Waves
I always loved visiting Little beach House but waking up right in front of the sea to the sound of the waves and the view of the horizon framed by the mountains is just something else.
The beach is so peaceful in the morning. Feel I have it for myself. I go for a swim as the first thing and I stay in the sand, playing with the waves as when I was a child. Always felt it was the ultimate pleasure just flowing around in the edge of the sea, neither swimming or getting up. Like staying awake in the morning without getting out of bed.
I have a soya cappuccino on the sunbed while I dry off in the sun. When people start coming in from the city, I go to my room. Today I have taken the day off for myself. The only planned “disruption” is dinner later with my dear friend Catherine.
Brunch in Bed & Sea View Therapy
On my way up, I order brunch to my room. Pancakes and coconut yoghurt in bed with a view to the sea. What’s not to like!! After giving up finishing the pancakes I move to the balcony and just sit there, enjoying the view, reading and letting time drift away.
I take another round on the beach and afterwards go upstairs to the terrace lounge. It’s Sunday, there is quite a lot of people now at the beach but the terrace is quite undisturbed and the view is spectacular.
Around 5pm when my friend arrives, I’ve relaxed so much that I actually feel like a bit of activity. Before we leave for a walk we have a sweat appetizer downstairs at the terrace. This Mango Coconut dessert turns out to be the best one I have had at the place.
We walk up to Garraf village. A small 10 min walk along the small wooden green and white houses on the beach and up the hill.
The village is tiny with small houses with white facades and flowers crawling up the walls, beautiful tiles and views to the sea and the small harbor. A total feeling of being on vacation far away from urban life.
Dinner From The Sea
Back at the hotel, we rush to the restaurant. We got hungry of the ten minutes walk;-) We start with a homemade lemonade (my favourite), sooo crusty tomato bread and a great guacamole with root fruit chips.
For main course Catherine has the octopus, which looks so good that I almost regret my choice, but when I taste my Sea Bream(Dorada) I am happy. I even eat most of the skin which I never do, but it is so tasty and crisp.
At the end of the dinner, the view has turned into dark bluish tones lit up by the lights from the cliff.
One day has passed and I feel like I’ve been on a weeks’ vacation far away and is so close by. Very convenient to have half an hour’s drive back from vacation!
Little Beach House is closing down for this season now in October but I am already looking forward to coming back next year for a longer stay.
In the meantime Soho House Barcelona in the city remains open. Also a really nice place worth a visit!
